Since 2000 there have been over 48,000 terrorist attacks that have killed over 107,000 people. In 2013 alone, there were a total of 9,814 attacks that killed 17,958 people, according to the Global Terrorism Index.
Over 82% of all those who were killed in terrorist attacks in 2013 were in just five countries: Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria and Syria. The countries are the 5 countries most impacted by terrorism on the 2014 Global Terrorism Index.
Excluding these 5 countries, there were around 4,000 terrorist attacks in the same year. There was a total of 24 countries where 50 or more people were killed in terrorist attacks in 2013, that’s a 60% increase from the previous year.
