Facts on Terrorism

Terrorism is one of the most widely debated topics of our time; recently, terrorist attacks and responses to terrorism have dominated global media headlines. But what do we actually know about terrorism?

Who are the most deadly terrorist groups in the world and where are they attacking? Which countries suffer the most from terrorism? What counter terrorism strategies are effective?

On the 18th of November the Institute for Economics and Peace, the brains behind Vision of Humanity, will release the 2014 Global Terrorism Index. The Index will rank 162 countries according to the impact of terrorism.

The research will provide a sober and fact based assessment of trends in terrorism around the world. Data and evidence has an important role to play in informing public debate as well as helping policymakers respond and understand the threat of terrorist violence.

Launch Events

The Global Terrorism Index will be launched at the houses of Parliament in London on the 18th of November. There will also be events in Washington D.C. and the Hague. If you can’t make it in person not to worry, there’s plenty happening online.

About the Global Terrorism Index

The Global Terrorism Index ranks 162 countries according to the impact of terrorism. The Index uses 4 indicators including the number of terrorist incidents, the number of fatalities, the number of causalities and the level of property damage. Each country is given a score and a five year weighted average is applied to account for the lasting impact of terrorism. Find out more about the methodology
