Martin Luther King Jr is one of history’s most renowned and admired peace activists. Often quoted, the American reverend has left a lasting impression with his involvement in the civil rights movement and efforts to eradicate racial discrimination and social injustice through peaceful protests.
King was the youngest man to receive the Nobel Peace prize, at just 35 years old, only to have his life cut short by an assassin four years later in Memphis, Tennessee.
Today is Martin Luther King Jr day, a day when the world comes together to remember this great man and to promote his efforts of non-violence.
King’s daughter Bernice spoke of her late father and said his philosophy of non-violence has even more relevance today than it did 10 years ago, as crime rates throughout the US continue to soar.
In order to celebrate the life and work of Martin Luther King, we encourage you to embrace non-violent social activism and to consider ways that you can help change and benefit your local community.
