Mexico’s Most Peaceful State

The most peaceful state in Mexico is Hidalgo, which has been in the top five most peaceful states on the Mexico Peace Index for four years. Hidalgo is a mid-sized state in central Mexico with a population of around 2.8 million people.

Although Hidalgo is the most peaceful state in Mexico, it has become slightly less peaceful over the last two years. This is reflected of a broader trend that we see with the 2015 Mexico Peace Index, and that is that the least peaceful states are becoming more peaceful, while the most peaceful states are becoming less peaceful.

Also mirroring a Mexico Peace Index trend, levels of violence peaked in 2010 in Hidalgo, as they did throughout Mexico.

The Mexico Peace Index gauges peace in all 32 states according to seven different indicators of peace. Hidalgo performs well on the majority of these indicators: it has the fourth lowest homicide rate, the eighth lowest violent crime rate, the fifth lowest level of organised crime, and the most efficient judicial system, with the highest number of homicide prosecutions relative to actual homicides.
